It's about being more able to work; to see your work with more success, joy and goal achievement. There are various methods for this, two of which we present here. The two methods can be applied in different professional areas, here we have taken a closer look at IT project management and nursing professionals.

Definition of terms

Supervision

Supervision is a form of professional counseling in which professionals reflect on their own professional actions - often with external support from a supervisor. The term comes from the Latin „overview“.
Supervision is often categorized as support for improving professional opportunities.

Intervision

Intervision (also known as collegial consultation) is a format in which members of the same or similar professional groups advise and reflect on one another - without an external specialist.
The focus is on exchange between equals („eye level“) and less on hierarchical or external management.

Differences at a glance

In supervision, there is usually a supervisor with qualifications and experience; in intervision, the participants usually moderate themselves.
Supervision is often institutionally embedded and can be used systematically in therapy, social work or organizations, for example.

Intervision is often used to promote collegial exchange, to reflect on joint practice and for development in a professional context without an external supervisor.

From the perspective of IT project managers: What are the benefits of supervision & intervision?

For project managers in IT and software projects, supervision and intervision can be used specifically to better overcome technical, team and process challenges. Here I will show you the benefits of both formats, what you should look out for as a project manager - and how they differ in the project context.

Supervision - benefits in the IT project environment

  • Reflecting on your own role and responsibilitiesProject managers often have a hybrid role (agile coach, steering, stakeholder management). Supervision helps to critically scrutinize one's own actions („How do I affect the team?“, „Am I leading in the right mode?“).

  • Quality assurance and risk preventionExternal or structured moderated reflection reveals issues that are often overlooked in day-to-day operations (e.g. power and communication dynamics, hidden conflicts). Supervision thus promotes overall efficiency and the early recognition of risks.

  • Support with psychological/social stressIn IT projects with high time pressure, changing requirements or intercultural teams, supervision sessions can help to address stress (role stress, burn-out tendencies, conflicts).

  • Development of leadership skillsIf, as a project manager, you want to be more than „just“ a technical manager, but a team and organizational developer, supervision can help you develop your coaching, moderation and reflection skills.

Intervision (peer counseling) - benefits in the IT project environment

  • Professional exchange and broadening of perspectivesProject managers bring in a specific case (e.g. „Sprint X is getting out of hand“, „Stakeholder demands feature Y despite a shortage of resources“) and receive new perspectives and suggestions for solutions from colleagues.

  • Learning and further development in the peer networkBy reflecting «on the job» in a group of peers, you will further develop your consulting, decision-making and moderation skills.

  • Cost-effective methodNo external specialist required, therefore also suitable for projects with tight budgets.

  • Promotion of team and organizational cultureIf several project managers or technical leads consult collegially, this can contribute to a culture of continuous learning and open communication.

Recognize boundaries: If a topic is very profound (e.g. personal conflict, organizational power relations), intervision alone may not be enough => then Supervision or coaching appropriate.

Benefits for the nursing professional

What are the specific benefits of supervision for nurses?

  • Reflection on own practice and professional roles: Nurses are often confronted with complex requirements (medical-technical, social, ethical). Supervision helps to question „What am I doing?“, „How am I reacting?“ and „What dynamics are occurring in the team/with the patients?“.

  • Dealing with stress: In care settings (e.g. intensive care, long-term care, palliative care), there is a high level of stress due to time pressure, emotional demands and ethical conflicts. Supervision offers space to address these stresses and develop strategies.

  • Professionalization and quality development: External reflection enables care professionals to develop new perspectives, expand their scope of action and improve the quality of care.

  • Promoting mental hygiene: Supervision can help to deal with stress, avoid exhaustion and strengthen mental health.

What are the benefits of intervision in the care context?

  • Professional and collegial exchange: Nursing staff bring specific situations with them (e.g. difficult patientinternal contact, team conflict, organizational issues) and receive perspectives from colleagues.who have had similar experiences.

  • Strengthening personal responsibility and competence development: Through moderation within the group, nursing staff learn to formulate their concerns, develop solution strategies and recognize transferability to other situations.

  • Promotion of team and organizational culture: When nursing professionals work together regularly in intervision groups, this strengthens cohesion, communication and the climate of reflection within the team.

  • Efficient method: Without external management or supervisor, this method can be more cost-effective and can be integrated directly into everyday care.
